Two visitors from the RNIB and two students at Bangor Campus, where guests were treated to hair and beauty services

A group of 12 RNIB clients and volunteers enjoyed a pre-Christmas treat when they visited the Shadeka salon at SERC Bangor Campus recently.

Level 3 students on Beauty Therapy courses performed full-body massages and facials and Level 3 Hairdressing students gave haircuts and blow-dries to the guests, who had travelled from Belfast, Lisburn and Bangor to avail of the services on offer.

The pamper day was organised in partnership with RNIB’s Community Access Worker, Olive Brown.  Olive had previously delivered training to the SERC students on how to work with clients who are visually impaired or blind.

Lecturer Lynn Hamill Fitzpatrick says, “The SERC teams were eager to put their newly-developed skills into practice. It’s important for students to learn how to adapt to working with a range of clients and to develop awareness which will make their future workspace welcoming to everyone.  We have had a relationship with RNIB for some years now and it’s been of benefit to both sides. We are keen to work with other organisations in the future to broaden the student experience even further.”
