Course Overview
The 2 year course aims to develop the practical skills and knowledge essential to working in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.  You will complete all the Level 2 outcomes required to match the occupational framework.
 
Modules studied may include:
  • Fitting and assembly of related parts
  • Fabrication and assembly of pipework related to refrigeration
  • Electrical componenet wiring/testing triple evacuation
  • Brazing standards
  • Safe handling of refrigerants
 
This includes practical activities in the workshop and workplace within the refrigeration or air conditioning industry. You will gain multiple skills from this course in areas such as electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.  
 
You will also have the opportunity to participate in the Young Enterprise NI programme which will develop your employability skills and help you explore the idea of starting your own business.
 
 
 
Entry Requirements
You must have a minimum of 4 GCSEs including grade D in Maths and English.  
 
You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy, at Level 2, if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths. You will also be required to complete an Essential Skill in Information Technology.
 
You must pass a colour blindness test that has been certified by an optician.
 
Where will it take me?
The Programme-Led Apprenticeship course will provide you with the skills and qualifications necessary to move on to the Apprenticeship Level 2 in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. At any point during this course you can move to the Level 2 Apprenticeship if you become employed and have the relevant entry requirements. This will then take you to the Level 3 Apprenticeship which will make you a fully trained technician/engineer within the refrigeration and air conditioning industry.
 
How will it make me more employable?
There are periods of work experience as part of this course. Successful completion of the course may lead to progression to the Level 3 Refrigeration programme.

  • Gaining a vocational qualification demonstrating your technical competence
  • Gaining a Personal Development qualification demonstrating your employability skills (communication, teamwork, critical thinking)
  • Gaining hands on experience through Placements and Industry Projects
  • Getting involved in activities such as the SERC Volunteer Programme and SERC Student Companies.
This course will help you succeed in a highly competitive job market by developing the skills and knowledge which employers need you to have.
How will I be assessed and given feedback?
You will be assessed through a series of practical and theory assignments.
