Pearson BTEC HNC Diploma in Health and Social Care (QCF)

The course focusses on giving you the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and values to further your career in Health and Social Care professions

Course Overview

This course is delivered through a combination of classroom teaching and a 200 hour work placement in a relevant Health and Social Care workplace. This may be your current job if suitable.  Both of these elements are a compulsory part of the course.  There is a focus on helping you to develop the knowledge, skills and values necessary for further education, employment and professional development within the health and social care sector.  You will be encouraged to develop and reflect on your learning within a continuous learning environment.

The course is delivered as a 2 Year Part time programme in our Newtownards Campus. 

This will require you to attend college for 1 day/evening per week..

Modules may include:

  • Communicating in Health & Social Care Practice
  • Health & Safety in the Health & Social Care Workplace
  • Personal and Professional Development in Health & Social Care
  • Principles of Health & Social Care Practice
  • Empowering Service Users
  • Physiological Perspectives (or) Social Policy
  • Working in partnership in Health & Social Care   
  • Safeguarding in Health & Social Care

Students are required to take eight subjects to achieve the level 4 qualification.

The Programme is eligible for funding.  You should research your funding options very carefully.  For example the 1 year full time programme attracts a level of funding that is applicable to a one year course.

Access NI clearance will need to be processed for each student.


Entry Requirements


You need to be over 18 years of age.

GCE A Level: CC or above (not a combination to make up 160 UCAS points)

Level 3 90 Credit Extended Diploma with a MERIT grade overall or 60 Credit with a DISTINCTION overall.  

Level 3 NVQ in a relevant vocational area

An Access course with a result of 63% or over.

GCSE English and Maths at a Grade C or above.

Experience of work or placements in the health and social sector are desirable criteria. 

You will be required to attend for an interview as part of your application to this course.

Where will it take me?


Progression to further study: 

This qualification will give you a minimum of 120 credits which you can use to progress to related degree programmes.  Previous students have successfully applied to degrees in Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Youth work, Speech & Language therapy and associated Social Sciences.

In 2015/2016 over 85% of students received their 1st choice University offer with the majority progressing to Queen's and Ulster Universities to study Nursing and Social Work.

Progression to work:

The course can lead directly into a career in health and social care for example previous students have sought employment as auxiliary nurses, community care assistants, residential support workers.


Students can progress to the Level 5 HND (Management Level which is delivered in the Newtownards Campus as blended learning course).  Your tutors will discuss this during the Level 4 programme.


How will it make me more employable?

This programme will provide you with the skills to enable you to meet the demands of a challenging health and social care sector.

It may also help you to manage a change in your personal circumstances, which has led you to consider retraining in the health and social care sector.

It may also help you to contribute to your requirements for Continuous Professional Development. 

How will I be assessed and given feedback?


The assessment of this programme is referenced to set learning outcomes which you are required to pass. 

Assessment strategies include continuous assessment through work-based and class-based learning.  Role-plays, presentations, essays, group work and poster presentations are used frequently to assess your learning. 

Assessment will also include time constrained activities.  These will require you to meet set criteria under exam conditions. 

Your vocational practice will be assessed through observation, reports and a personal reflective log.  At the end of the year you will be expected to present a portfolio of evidence that meets all course requirements.

Possible grades for the programme are as follows:

Distinction, Merit, Pass, Fail.  These will be calculated at the end of the year.


Accreditation of prior learning is a process by which you may be awarded credits for learning that you have gained in the past and which is relevant to the course to which you have applied. It may also help you gain entry to a programme if you do not have the required entry qualifications.  This may be certificated or experiential learning.  Please ask for additional information.
