Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in IT

This Year 1 course is the equivalent to 2 AS levels. This useful and popular Information Technology course has a practical focus and will prepare you for employment in the IT industry or for further study.

Course Overview

This Year 1 course is the equivalent to 2 AS levels. This useful and popular Information Technology course has a practical focus and will prepare you for employment in the IT industry or for further study, including progression onto the HE programmes such as HND.


Mandatory modules include:

  • Communication and Employability Skills for IT

  • Computer Systems

    Optional modules may be the following depending on availability:

  • Procedural Programming

  • Maintaining Computer Systems

  • Website Production

  • Database Skills

  • Workshop

  • Interactive Media Authoring

  • Event Driven Programming

  • Tutorial

  • Employability Skills

  • Database Development


You will also work towards a Personal Development qualification and will be involved in a range of activities, designed to improve employability.  You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths.

As a student you will typically be in class for a minimum of 17.5 hours per week.

Entry Requirements

 In order to enrol on this course you require:

  • 4 GCSEs, grade C or above 


  • OCR Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in IT (Pass)

Where will it take me?

Successful completion of this course will lead directly onto further study on the 1 year Subsidiary Diploma (top-up), which upon completion will be the equivalent to 2 A Levels.  Alternatively, the course can also lead directly into a career as an ICT support technician or a trainee programmer or web developer.

How will it make me more employable?

This course will help you succeed in a highly competitive job market by developing the skills and knowledge which employers need you to have.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?

There will be one formal examination in this course per year.  All other units are assessed continuously throughout the two years using assignments and other practical assessment methods. At the end of two years all unit grades are totalled to give an overall grade for the qualification. If successful you can achieve any grade between DD, two distinctions, and PP, two passes.

Additional Costs

There are not normally any additional costs thought students will benefit from having access to a computer or laptop at home.
