Course Overview

This Level 3 Motor Sport Engineering course is equivalent to A Levels and runs for 2 years. It is made up of two qualifications.

There is an attendance commitment requirement of 15 hours per week. 

IMI Level 3 Extended Diploma in Motorsport Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

Modules may include:

  • Diagnosing and Rectifying Motorsport Chassis System and Electrical/Electronic Equipment Faults
  • Setting up & Inspecting a Motorsport Vehicle during Competition
  • Diagnosing and Rectifying Motorsport Engines and Transmissions
  • ICT
  • Vehicle Maths
  • Vehicle Science

and an EAL Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering Technologies

Modules may include:

  • Engineering and Environmental Health & Safety
  • Fabrication and Welding Principles
  • General engineering maintenance techniques
  • Metal inert gas, metal active gas (MIG/MAG) Welding
  • Producing sheet metal fabrications


Entry Requirements

Applicants will need the following qualifications or equivalent:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade C or above in Maths, English, Science and a Technology related subject.
Where will it take me?

On successful completion of the course you could progress to Higher Education such as a Degree in Motorsport Vehicle Preparation or a Degree in Engineering.

Alternatively this course could lead into a career in the Engineering or Motor Vehicle Industry.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?

Assessments will be continuous throughout the course with a combination of assignments and practical tasks (some of which will be carried out at a Race Venue) and on-line tests.

An e-portfolio system is used to capture the skills evidence and provide a forum for individual feedback and performance monitoring.

Awarding bodies are IMI - Institute of the Motor Industry and EAL
