Course Overview

This one year course is the equivalent to 3 AS levels and enables you to learn about working within the Sports industry.  The course will give you a wide range of knowledge and skills essential to progress within the world of sport and exercise through the study of units directly related. There is an attendance commitment requirement of 15 hours per week.

Modules studied may include:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Practical Team Sports
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Fitness Testing and Training
  • Sports Coaching
  • Leadership
  • Exercise Health and Lifestyle 


You will also work towards a Personal Development qualification and you will be involved in a range of off-site trips and activities, designed to improve employability and knowledge of the sector.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for this course are 4 GCSE’s between grades A* to C or equivalent, with preference given to those with English and Maths.

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT if you do not have a GCSE grade C or equivalent in English or Maths or ICT.

In circumstances where there are more applications for a course than there are places available, the College reserves the right to ask for higher grades.

Where will it take me?
Successful completion of this course will lead directly onto further study on the one year Extended Diploma (top-up), which upon completion will be the equivalent to 3 A Levels.  After this, students can progress to Higher Education or directly into employment in the sports and leisure industry.
How will it make me more employable?

You will ‘Get the Edge’ by:

  • Gaining a vocational qualification demonstrating your technical competence.
  • Gaining a Personal Development qualification demonstrating your employability skills (communication, teamwork, critical thinking)
  • You will also be given the opportunity to complete coaching and officiating qualifications across various sports as well as undertaking a work placement in an area of your choosing. 


How will I be assessed and given feedback?
Assessment will include a combination of written assignments and practical tasks.
Additional Costs

There will be an up-front cost of £100 for Year 1 of the programme to cover various educational visits and additional qualifications.  Further details will be provided on enrolment.

This course is accredited by Edexcel.
