This is a 1 year course with an equivalency of 3 AS Levels and on successful completion will lead directly on to our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) which is equivalent to 3 A Levels.

Course Overview

This course is suitable for students considering pathways into higher education in dance or employment in the industry. You will train in a broad range of dance practices and gain an insight into the world of dance. The course provides opportunities to develop skills in creativity and performance.  

Throughout the year you will cover a number of modules, to develop both practical and theoretical skills.

Modules studied may include: 

  • Performance Workshop                                      
  • Dance Performance
  • Performing to an Audience                              
  • Historical Context
  • Developing Classical Ballet Technique           
  • Developing Contemporary Dance Technique
  • Jazz Dance                                                              
  • Developing Choreographic Techniques 

You will also work towards a Personal Development qualification and will be involved in a range of activities, designed to improve your employability.   

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy or ICT if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths or Computing. 

Entry Requirements

As well as a natural ability potential students must be able to demonstrate a good basic grounding in one or more dance style. Entry is by audition and interview and the interview process will involve a one to one interview, written task and a workshop audition. The outcomes of which, along with the required grades below, will determine your successful entry to this programme. 

  • BTEC Level 2 Diploma or 4 GCSE’s at Grade C or above  
  • GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above or equivalent e.g. Essentials Skills  

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths or ICT.  

Please note that if the course is oversubscribed additional criteria will be applied.


Where will it take me?

Successful completion of this course will lead directly onto further study on the 1 year Extended Diploma, which upon completion will be the equivalent to 3 A Levels.

There are very good progression opportunities to university and specialist colleges on completion of the Extended Diploma (top-up). Alternatively you could apply to study on our Higher National Diploma (HND) in Performing Arts can lead to a career in acting, producing, teaching or arts management.

This course will help you succeed in a highly competitive job market by developing the skills and knowledge which employers need you to have.

As well as gaining a recognised qualification you will take part in employability skills workshops and gain skills in teamwork, commitment, IT and problem solving. You will also have the opportunity to become a member of The Glass Umbrella Theatre Company.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?
You will be assessed throughout the year on: performances, individual and group work, research and evaluations.
Each unit will have a number of assignments that will be graded at distinction, merit and pass level.
