Course Overview

The Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science provides students with a solid foundation in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  It prepares students for progression onto Level 3 programmes and employment.  It is equivalent to four GCSEs.

The vocational course is delivered over 15 hours per week. 

Modules may include:

  • Principles of Science (Exam)
  • Chemistry and our Earth
  • Energy and our Universe
  • Biology and our Environment
  • Applications of Chemical Substances
  • Applications of Physical Science
  • Health Applications of Life Science
  • Scientific Skills (Exam)
  • The Living Body
  • Science in Medicine
  • Chemical Analysis and Detection
  • Biotechnology Procedures and Applications


You will also be required to:

Complete Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths. This will be a mandatory part of your course.

Work towards a Personal Development qualification and will be involved in a range of activities, designed to improve employability.

Entry Requirements

 A minimum of 2 GCSEs at grades D or above.

There will be interview held prior to enrolment. 

In circumstances where there are more applications for a course than there are places available, the College reserves the right to ask for higher grades.


Where will it take me?

The course is equivalent to four GCSE’s.

Students typically progress onto Level 3 programmes, including Level 3 Applied Science.

Achievement at a higher level of study can lead to careers within the forensic, biology, chemistry, pharmacy or science industries.

How will it make me more employable?
 You will ‘Get the Edge’ by:
  • Gaining a vocational qualification demonstrating your theoretical and technical competence
  • Gaining a Personal Development qualification demonstrating your employability skills (communication, teamwork, critical thinking)
  • Gaining hands on experience through Industry Projects
  • Getting involved in activities such as the SERC Volunteer Programme and SERC Student Companies


This course will help you succeed in a highly competitive job market by developing the skills and knowledge which employers need you to have.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?

Two out of the twelve modules will be assessed through external exams, two exams in total. 

The remaining ten units are assessed through coursework.  This can take the form of written work, practical activities and projects.

This BTEC course is regulated and accredited by EDEXCEL.
