Course Overview

This one year Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-Up is a qualification that has been specially designed to enable you to learn both aspects of hairdressing and media make-up artist.  Within the course you will develop the knowledge and skills to prepare you for employment as a junior hair and make-up artist.  Learners will have their hairdressing and make-up artistry skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.

Modules studied may include:

  • The art of dressing hair
  • The art of photographic make-up
  • Apply make-up
  • Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Cut women's hair
  • Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
  • Plaiting and twisting hair
  • Colour hair

 

This full-time course will be timetabled over 21 hours per week ie - 15 hours of vocational classes, 3 hours per week employability training and 3 hours per week Essential skills English and Maths. You will be required to attend essential skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT if you do not have a GCSE in English, Maths and IT.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have a good standard of education.

 

Two GCSEs at grade C or above.

 

You will be required to complete an Interview and Skills Test for this course.

 

Where will it take me?

You may progress to further study at Level 3 to include the following or into employment as a junior hair and make-up artist such as commercial hair and beauty salons.

  • VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF)
  • VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up (QCF)
How will it make me more employable?
As a full time student you will ‘Get the Edge’ by:
 
  • Gaining a vocational qualification demonstrating your technical competence
  • Gaining a Personal Development qualification demonstrating your employability skills (communication, teamwork, critical thinking)
  • Gaining hands on experience through Placements and Industry Projects
  • Getting involved in activities such as the SERC Volunteer Programme and SERC Student Companies.
 

This course will help you succeed in a highly competitive job market by developing the skills and knowledge which employers need you to have.

You will have gained skills in both hairdressing and make-up.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?
You will be assessed on your competence in each skills area by observation in the salon, oral questioning and written examination.
Additional Costs

Learners are required to provide materials and equipment eg uniform and hairdressing and a make-up kit.   Details of cost will be provided by the course tutor.
