Course Overview

You will gain experience of working in a caring setting as well as acquiring knowledge of the theory of health and social care.  You will have the opportunity to gain practical caring skills in care settings through work placements and working with different client groups.  You will gain an appreciation of the skills and qualities required to be a "carer" and become more knowledgeable in good care practice.

You will study 4 core and 4 optional units and  you will participate in periods of work placement, a minimum of 60 hours. There is an attendance commitment requirement of at least 15 hours per week.

  • Health & Social Care Services
  • Vocational Experience in a Health & Care setting
  • Anatomy & Physiology for Health & Social Care


Core Units:

  • Communication in Health & Social Care
  • Individual Needs in Health & Social Care
  • Individual rights in Health & Social Care
  • Ensuring Safe environments in Health & Social Care


You will be required to undertake a period of work experience, examples of which could include working in a nursing home or within a childcare setting.  You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy and Numeracy if you do not have a GCSE grade C in English or Maths together with ICT Essential Skills.  You will also participate in enterprise and entrepreneurship programme to  help you explore and develop ideas for starting your own business.

Entry Requirements

A  minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade D or above.

You should have a strong desire to care for others in either a health or social care setting and are committed to undertaking work experience.

As you will be working with young children or vulnerable adults, a police check will be required for all those who receive an offer of a place on this course.

Where will it take me?

The Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma is an ideal starting point for a career in health and care sector.

If you achieve a Merit grade in the Diploma in order for you to progress to Level 3 study in Health & Social Care or Early Years.  You may then progress to a Degree level, which may lead to jobs such as nursing and social work or management positions in the health industry.

How will it make me more employable?
As well as gaining a recognised qualification (Level 2 qualification in Health & Social Care), you will complete periods of work placement.  You will partake in team building exercises.  Understand and appreciate different forms of communication, gain experience with interview skills and be more knowledgeable in legislation, policies and codes of practice that are embedded in care practice.  In essence all of the above will enhance your opportunities when applying for work within any health and social care sector.
How will I be assessed and given feedback?
The course will be assessed by coursework and assignments.
Additional Costs

Access NI clearance will need to be processed for each student at a cost of £33.

Any educational trips may incur additional costs.
