Course Overview

This two year course will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge essential to work with the IT Sector. The course will enable you to qualify for a level 3 OCR Technical Diploma in IT together with a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Professional Competence.

Subjects studied will depend on the work-placement and could include:

Software Installation and Upgrade

Testing ICT Systems

ICT System Operation

Database Software

Creating an Event-driven Computer Program

Develop Own Effectiveness and Professionalism

Health and Safety in ICT

Communication and Employability Skills for IT’

Interactive Media Authoring

Computer Systems

Website Production  

You will also study Essential Skills to level 2 in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT unless exempt through GCSE grades C or above in Maths, English and ICT respectively.  

Placements are an integral part of this programme where you will gain valuable work experience.  

As a student you will spend a minimum of 12 hours a week in the College and this is subject to trainees having a work placement.

Entry Requirements
Candidates  will normally have completed the Level 2 Skills for Work In IT and Telecoms Professional  programme.   You will be required to complete Essential Skills Level 2 in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT if you do not have a GCSE grade C or above or L2 Essential Skills in Maths, English and ICT respectively. You will also participate in enterprise and entrepreneurship programmes to help you explore and develop ideas for starting your own business
Where will it take me?
If you secure employment during the programme you can move directly into the Apprenticeship at Level 3. Successful completion of the course gives you a qualification in IT; learners could progress to employment in the IT sector. It could lead to employment as a business analyst, games designer, computer hardware engineer or service technician, IT product developer, IT technical sales specialist of IT trainer.  It may lead to employment in other non-IT sectors such as management, finance or business or to higher education vocational qualifications such as the Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Computing and Systems Development. Further study on higher education courses can lead to a career in networking or programming.
How will it make me more employable?
This course can give you qualifications which will improve your job opportunities. You will complete modules in Employability and Personal Development. You will be able to undertake junior roles within teams that work in the IT sector.
How will I be assessed and given feedback?
The Level 3 Diploma is assessed by a combination of on-line tests and assignments set by the awarding body and a building of a student portfolio of work. You will also be expected to build a student portfolio of evidence and will be assessed in the workplace. You will be given regular oral and written feedback.
Additional Costs
There are not normally any additional costs though students will need to have access to a computer or laptop at home.
