Course Overview

This course will allow you to study while you work.  Ideal if you are already employed in a salon and want to pursue your career in hairdressing.

You will learn how to style and finish hair, cut hair and colour and lighten hair.  You will also advise and consult with clients and fulfil reception duties.

Modules may include:
• Advise and consult with clients
 • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
 • Style and finish hair
 • Cutting hair using basic techniques

 • Plait and twist hair

You will get experience in a real salon environment at the College, which is open to the public and your salon placement.

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT if you do not have a GCSE grade C or L2 Essential Skills in English, Maths and ICT.
Entry Requirements

You must have secured employment (min 21hrs, inclusive of College hours) within the industry (a hairdressing salon). You will also need 5 GCSEs including at least grade F in English and Maths.  However to help you succeed on the course it is preferable if you have a minimum D in Maths and English.   

You need to be 16 years of age by end of June.

This course requires an interview and skills test.

Where will it take me?

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress onto a Level 3 Apprenticeship or alternatively go to work directly into this industry.  Other Further and Higher Education progression routes may also be available.

How will it make me more employable?

This course can give you formal qualifications which will improve your job opportunities and employability skills.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?
You will be assessed in each skill area by observation, oral and written assessment.
Additional Costs
You will be required to pay for your own uniform and kit. Your tutor will give you details of these costs.
This is a VTCT course.

  • Pass all modules in each year of study in order to proceed to the next year of the programme.
