Course Overview

Construction plant mechanics make sure that plant equipment on construction sites, like diggers and dumper trucks, is maintained and working safely.

This 2 year course will equip you with the skills needed to work in the construction machinery industry.


Subjects studied will include:   

 • Fitting engines
 • Brakes steering
 • Wheels and tyres
 • Tracks and running gear
 • Plant electrics
 • Welding
Entry Requirements

You must hold a Level 2 qualification in the same vocational area.

You must have secured employment (minimum of 21 hours, inclusive of college hours) within the industry.

You need to be 16 or over by the end of June but no older than 24.

You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and IT if you do not have a GCSE grade C or Level 2 Essential Skill in Maths, English or IT.

Where will it take me?

In addition to employment you can consider Higher Education courses in construction or other professional development courses on successful completion of this course.  You will be able to take up a job within the construction machinery industry when you finish this course, for example as a plant engineer or a plant maintenance engineer.

With experience, you could progress to construction plant technician, technical service representative, site supervisor or site manager.

You could also set up your own business.

How will it make me more employable?
You will work a number of days each week with your employer. As an Apprentices you must be employed in a company that can provide you with the opportunity to experience the full range of construction machinery maintenance and repair activities to satisfy the requirements of plant maintenance & repair apprenticeship.
How will I be assessed and given feedback?
Skills and knowledge will be assessed with a range of practical tasks and multiple-choice tests (online).  In addition, evidence of occupational competence is collected from jobs carried out in the workplace.
