Course Overview

This course is offered two evenings per week for 15 weeks. There may also be a two week Intensive course run at different stages of the year.

You will gain a vocationally related qualification (VRQ), at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework.

This Qualification allows access on to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REP) at Level 2.

 

Modules may include:

Unit 1 Anatomy and physiology for exercise (H/600/9013) – 6 credits

Unit 2 Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity (M/600/9015) – 2 credits

Unit 3 Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment (T/600/9016) – 2 credits

Unit 4 Principles of exercise, fitness and health (A/600/9017) – 4 credits

Unit 5 - Planning gym-based exercise (F/600/9018) 4 credits

Unit 6 Instructing gym-based exercise (A/600/9020) – 6 credits

* £100 reduction in tuition fees for any prospective students that are currently enrolled on Foundation Degree Sport & Full Time L3 or L2 Sport courses at SERC.

Entry Requirements

Some experience of gym based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended.

The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, and you should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 2.

Where will it take me?
This recognised qualification will provide you with the knowledge and skills to enable you to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective sessions within the working environment and meet legislative guidelines.
 
On completion this qualification will provide entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals at Level 2 so successful candidates can gain employment in a gym setting.
 
The course can lead to improved career opportunities within Fitness Industry.

This course will provide you with a professional qualification, if you are interested in fitness instruction and can lead to improved career opportunities within Fitness Industry.
How will I be assessed and given feedback?
Internal assessment comprises a portfolio of evidence and there is also an externally assessed, 105 minute theory paper consisting of fifty multiple choice questions.

  • Risk assessment safety planning document
  • Par-Q Screening
  • Session plan
  • Session evaluation
  • Direct observation of candidate instructing a gym session or group exercise to music session
  • Standardised worksheet
